What Is Diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus, commonly called diabetes, is a chronic disease that affects how the body uses glucose (blood sugar). Glucose is the body's main source of energy and comes from many of the foods people eat, especially carbohydrates such as bread, rice, pasta, fruits, and milk. After food is digested, glucose enters the bloodstream. The hormone insulin, which is produced by the pancreas, helps move glucose from the blood into the body's cells where it is used for energy. When the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot use insulin properly, glucose builds up in the bloodstream instead of entering the cells. This causes high blood sugar levels, also known as hyperglycemia. If left untreated for many years, high blood sugar can damage many organs, including the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, and blood vessels.
How Insulin Works
The pancreas is an organ located behind the stomach that produces insulin. Insulin acts like a key that unlocks the body's cells, allowing glucose to enter and be used for energy. Without enough insulin, or when the body's cells stop responding to insulin, glucose remains in the bloodstream. As blood sugar levels continue to rise, the body cannot function normally, leading to the symptoms and complications of diabetes.
Types of Diabetes
There are three main types of diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. As a result, the pancreas produces little or no insulin. People with Type 1 diabetes must take insulin every day through injections or an insulin pump to survive.
Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed during childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood, although it can develop at any age. Scientists believe that both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of this disease.
Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, accounting for about 90-95% of all diabetes cases. In Type 2 diabetes, the body still produces insulin, but the body's cells become resistant to its effects. Over time, the pancreas may also lose its ability to produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels normal.
Several factors increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, including obesity, physical inactivity, poor diet, family history, increasing age, and certain ethnic backgrounds. Unlike Type 1 diabetes, many cases of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed through healthy eating, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy body weight.
Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy in women who did not previously have diabetes. Pregnancy hormones make it more difficult for the body to use insulin effectively, causing blood sugar levels to rise.
Gestational diabetes usually disappears after childbirth. However, women who develop gestational diabetes have a greater chance of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life. Babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes may also have an increased risk of obesity and Type 2 diabetes as they grow older.
Symptoms of Diabetes
The symptoms of diabetes may develop gradually or appear suddenly depending on the type of diabetes. Common symptoms include:
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination
- Increased hunger
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Slow healing of cuts and wounds
- Frequent infections
- Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
People with Type 2 diabetes may not notice symptoms for several years because the disease often develops slowly.
How Diabetes Is Diagnosed
Doctors diagnose diabetes using several laboratory tests. The most common tests include:
- Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) Test: Measures blood sugar after not eating for at least eight hours.
- Hemoglobin A1C Test: Measures the average blood sugar level over the previous two to three months.
- Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Measures how the body processes glucose after drinking a sugary solution.
- Random Blood Glucose Test: Measures blood sugar at any time of the day if symptoms are present.
Complications of Diabetes
If diabetes is not properly managed, high blood sugar levels can damage many parts of the body over time. Possible complications include:
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Kidney disease
- Vision loss and blindness
- Nerve damage
- Foot ulcers and amputations
- Gum disease
- Increased risk of infections
Careful blood sugar management can greatly reduce the risk of these complications.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the type of diabetes.
People with Type 1 diabetes require insulin therapy for life. People with Type 2 diabetes often begin treatment with healthy eating, regular physical activity, weight management, and medications that improve insulin function. Some people with Type 2 diabetes eventually require insulin therapy.
People with diabetes are also encouraged to monitor their blood sugar regularly, attend regular medical checkups, and manage other health conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Prevention
Although Type 1 diabetes cannot currently be prevented, many cases of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented by:
- Eating a healthy, balanced diet
- Exercising regularly
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Avoiding smoking
- Receiving regular medical checkups
- Monitoring blood sugar if at high risk
Early diagnosis and treatment help reduce the risk of serious complications and improve quality of life.
